Free Play Studio started with a simple question: why does so much of what's sold for children feel like it was designed to be bought, not lived with?
As an architect, I've spent years thinking about how spaces and materials shape the people who use them. When we started looking for furniture and toys for our own home, ahead of welcoming our first child, I expected that same care to carry over into children's spaces. Instead we mostly found plastic, noise, and things built to be sold rather than kept.
My partner brings years of experience building online businesses, and together we felt this shop was the natural place to put both our strengths to use: an eye for thoughtful design, and the know-how to actually bring good things to people.
We partner with award-winning European brands who share a simple belief: children learn best through freedom of movement, real materials, and open-ended play. It's the same philosophy behind Montessori education, that a child's environment should invite independence rather than dictate it. Every piece we choose is made from real wood, built to support a child's natural pace of discovery.
We ask one question before adding anything to the shop: would we want this in our own child's room? If it's not a clear yes, it doesn't make the cut.
That belief only feels more real now, as we prepare to raise a child of our own. We believe childhood doesn't need more stimulation. It needs more room to explore, build, get quietly bored, and then wonderfully curious again.
